Give your new year a creative kick! Join DJ M DOT and friends for an evening of blending DJ technique and musical storytelling. All participants will arrive with a song and will leave with a full mixtape put together by the group during the event.
We sat down with M DOT to learn a bit more about her and her craft. Keep reading to learn more.
RCS: When and how did Community Mixtape begin?
M DOT: For years I’ve been developing programming that merges my DJ and conflict resolution skills. As a mediator, I’m good at bringing people together to talk about important issues; but there are times when you don’t need a big issue to come together- sometimes you just need a good song! Music automatically connects people, and Community Mixtape encourages people from all backgrounds and musical tastes to collaborate and learn from one another. Recreative Spaces has been an incredible motivating force behind this series and has encouraged this idea from the beginning!
RCS: What sets it apart as a unique experience?
M DOT: There are plenty of DJ schools in the area and very talented DJ’s giving lessons across the DMV. In a Community Mixtape session, you’ll learn different mixing techniques, get comfortable with DJ equipment, broaden your musical horizon, and create a mixtape that you can bring home. New friends, new skills, and a new experience sets Community Mixtape apart!
RCS: What do you enjoy most about DJing?
M DOT: I love telling a story through the songs that I play. I design each set differently- sometimes it’s chronological, I go through different decades of musical progression in a certain genre. Sometimes, I create a set based on a theme- for example, for Women’s Month parties I feature a lot of female artists and play songs that motivate me about women making it big and making their mark!
RCS: Outside of DJing, what are your creative outlets?
M DOT: Meditating, hiking, and crate-digging for records are my three favorite things to do outside of DJing!
