Hands on Drums - March 2016-Present

Hands on Drums was looking for a new space after a brief opportunity to pop up in nearby Ivy City through a grant program. They needed to move - quickly - and just like many arts organizations (us included!) they weren't ready to take on a long-term lease. Through a partnership with MRP Realty, we were able to assist them in securing temporary space in a former auto parts shop on Rhode Island Avenue NE. There was an incredible amount of work to do to get the space ready, and the end result is stunning! Hands on Drums will be in the space through the end of 2017, and will then be looking to move into a more permanent home.

Founded by Michael Kweku Owusu and Kristen Arant, Hands On Drums is a Pop-Up Store, Community Space and Arts Empowerment initiative that celebrates and supports the work of Ghana craft makers while delivering hands-on drumming and arts experiences to uplift communities. Our beautiful handcrafted drums, clothing, jewelry and accessories are procured through Direct Trade. All pricing and fees are negotiated between Kweku and his community partners in the Arts Center of Accra, Ghana. A fair wage is ensured for all our craftworkers.

Art in the Park(ing lot) - June-October 2016

This project was launched in the summer of 2016 as a way to activate the Northeast DC neighborhood of Brentwood. With support from MidCity Development and through community partnerships, free weekly arts programs brought creative energy to a vacant parking lot prior to demolition.
Thank you to all of the artists, neighbors, businesses, and friends who pARTicipated - we so enjoyed working and playing with you!

*Please note, we are no longer involved in this project. Any new activation of the space is not associated with ReCreative Spaces.
